2016 campaigns started handing in the latest round of campaign finance reports yesterday, revealing, six months from the primary, who actually has the cash to run a D.C. Council race.
Unfortunately, some of the reports—-including the final sums from FreshPAC, Muriel Bowser‘s affiliated political action committee—-haven’t been posted yet. LL will update when more reports go up.
At-Large
Vincent Orange
Raised: $140,675.00. Spent: $20,617.37. Cash on hand: $120,057.63.
Vincent Orange is defending his seat in what could be next year’s most competitive race, and he’s got the money to back him up. Among the donors: $4,000 from companies and people affiliated with developer Doug Jemal, and $2,000 from lobbyist and former Councilmember John Ray and his firm.
David Garber
Raised: $83,137.54. Spent: $29,571.71. Cash on hand: $53,565.83.
This is a mammoth haul for a challenger. Who knew smart growther and sometimes tiny house foe David Garber had it in him? Garber’s donor rolls include ex-planning boss Harriet Tregoning ($150), former attorney general candidate Paul Zukerberg ($200) and, uh, Marvin Bowser, the mayor’s brother.
Garber has apparently also won over the District’s chef class, with $1,000 from Toki Underground chef Erik Bruner-Yang, $1,000 from Bruner-Yang’s Maketto restaurant, and $250 from Union Kitchen.
Robert White
Raised: $11,045. Spent: $6,559.92. Cash on hand: $9,071.51.
The exploratory committee to give 2014 at-large hopeful Robert White another shot at office launched later this his rivals, and it has the lower fundraising totals to prove it. White’s donors include his boss, Attorney General Karl Racine ($1,000), and wine bar owner and former 2014 at-large candidate Khalid Pitts ($500).
Dave Oberting
Raised: $12,380.16. Spent: $672.42. Cash on hand: $11,707.74.
As the Republican in the race, Oberting isn’t really running against Orange, White, and Garber. Instead, he’ll be facing incument Councilmember David Grosso for the at-large seat reserved for non-Democrats in November.
Ward 2
Jack Evans
Raised:$90,360. Spent: $13,386.42. Cash on hand: $116,057.58.
Incumbent Jack Evans doesn’t have a challenger, but he went ahead and raised nearly $100,000 anyway. The cash came mostly from the usual Evans pals who funded his mayoral run—-real estate lawyer Norman “Chip“ Glasgow, for example, kicked in $500 this time around. Evans’ campaign has so much money they’ve been giving some of it to charity.
Ward 7
Yvette Alexander
Raised: $60,470.00. Spent: $15,119.84 Cash on hand: $45,350.16.
This is a decent amount of money from Yvette Alexander, but it’s not exactly “keep Vince Gray out of the race” money.
You don’t need more evidence that Ward 7’s Yvette Alexander has joined Bowser’s Green Team, but LL has some anyway. Among Alexander’s donors this time around: former FreshPAC attorney Thorn Pozen ($500) and donor Fred Hill ($500).
