Be sure to check out Dave McKenna‘s Cheap Seats column about  politicians who misstate their athletic records of yesteryear. The focus of the column is on a Maryland state delegate whose campaign website falsely claims he played for the Dallas Cowboys for three years. But At-Large D.C. Councilmember Michael A. Brown—who says he was named “All-Met” while playing basketball at Mackin Catholic High School in the early 1980s—also gets a mention.

Writes McKenna:

I have trouble doubting that Brown, at 45, believes he made an All-Met basketball team as a kid. But The Washington Post says otherwise. Camille Powell, who edits the paper’s high school sports coverage, double-checked for me: “I looked through the copies of the 1980–85 All-Met teams again,” she reported back via e-mail, “and I don’t see any mention of Michael/Mike Brown and Mackin, not even in the all-league lists.” (Future Duke great Johnny Dawkins and future Villanova star Dominic Pressley, both also from Mackin, showed up on those All-Met teams.)

Brown, an Independent who is supporting D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray‘s mayoral bid, has said he could possibly run against D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty as an Independent this fall in the event Gray loses the Democratic nomination in September. Gray, for the record, says he was a double-varsity athlete at Dunbar Senior High School.
