Looks like another chapter in D.C.’s LGBTQ history is coming to an end.

Phase 1, a lesbian bar on Barracks Row that opened in 1970, is reportedly up for sale or lease. The bar had been closed “until further notice” since February, when its owner posted a short message on its Facebook page to that effect. Leading up to this year, Phase 1 had served patrons from Thursdays through Sundays after it reopened in March 2015, according to the Washington Blade. Last August, founder Allen Carroll told the paper that he didn’t “know if the girls still want their own club.” Carroll, who could not be immediately reached, told Capitol Hill Corner he does not know what’s next for him.

Up until last year, Phase 1 had a branch in D.C.’s historically queer Dupont Circle neighborhood since 2012, Borderstan reported. That outpost, situated at 1415 22nd St. NW, closed without much ado last September. The Barracks Row spot is located at 525 8th St. SE, nearby restaurants like Rose’s Luxury, Garrison, Matchbox, and Ted’s Bulletin on Capitol Hill.
