The District’s statehood commission voted today to claim two more buildings for the proposed state of New Columbia—including the Old Post Office site, where the new Trump Hotel is located.

The commission wants D.C. to become a state called New Columbia, but a portion of the city would be left behind to remain as the seat of the federal government. The White House, the Capitol, the Supreme Court, the National Mall, and other federal buildings would fall outside the boundaries of New Columbia, but the exact lines are still being determined.

Mayor Muriel Bowser, Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, and the three members of D.C.’s shadow congressional delegation voted 5-0 to recommend the amendment. In addition to the Trump Hotel site at 1100 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, the commission voted to include 750 15th St. NW, where Joe’s Seafood is located.

The D.C. Council will vote on whether to accept the proposed changes into the referendum that District residents will vote on in November.
