Washington City Paper is your community newspaper. And we believe that local news should be accessible to everyone in the community. With the support of our members, we’re making that vision a reality.

We may be small, but we punch above our weight, and our reporting has a big impact in D.C.

Following our investigation into a slumlord’s practices, the attorney general filed a lawsuit and ultimately barred the company’s principles from working in D.C. The Washington Post‘s chief food critic cited our cover story in his decision to include accessibility information in his reviews, and that story was named one of the best pieces of American food writing for 2020. We routinely break news and report on every aspect of life and culture in D.C., all for free.

Unfortunately, the business model that supports local news no longer works. The internet and Great Recession significantly cut into the advertising revenue that sustains newspapers like ours. In 2019, the New York Times wrote that more than one out of every five local newspapers in the country had closed. And that was before the pandemic.

We believe that membership is the solution. And more than 1,000 of our readers agree. They have stepped up to keep local news alive and accessible in D.C.

Every dollar you give goes back into producing the high-impact and delightful reporting you trust, and keeps it free for everyone. Your contributions pay for writers, editors, fact-checking, and beautiful photography and design work, all of which are expensive. In short, you make City Paper possible.

“During this global pandemic Washington City Paper has been my lifeline to reality.”
