Much like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Washington, D.C. Area Film Critics Association highlights the year’s achievements in film with annual awards. Unlike the Academy Awards, however, there is no fancy gala in a big theater with a (usually) lame host and big-name stars. Because, really, who has time for all that? Instead, WAFCA (which includes myself and City Paper film critics Tricia Olszewski, Noah Gittell, and Alan Zilberman) spares you all that glitzy hullabaloo and gets right down to it, with an online announcement of this year’s winners. You’re welcome.

So, who won big this year? Jordan Peele‘s seething racial horror-satire Get Out was named Best Picture as and also received the Best Original Screenplay award, while Christopher Nolan was named Best Director for Dunkirk. In the acting categories, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri actors Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell won for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively, and the film won for Best Acting Ensemble. Additionally, Gary Oldman was named Best Actor for Darkest Hour and Laurie Metcalf won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Greta Gerwig‘s stellar Lady Bird.
