In November, the Washington City Paper asked its music writers to compile lists of their 10 favorite releases of the past year. Critics were required to divide a total of 100 points among their selections, awarding no more than 30 points—and no fewer than 1—to each. Any single, EP, album, or box set of old or new music released in any quantity anywhere in the world in 2001 was eligible. Three weeks, 1,800 points, and a 44-way tie for 21st later:
