The District might not have to go through politics without a Marion Barry for long. After toying with running for a little over a month after his father’s death, the mayor-for-life’s son Christopher Barry filed papers today to replace him in the Ward 8 D.C. Council seat.

While the 34-year-old Marion Christopher Barry has usually used his middle name, he hinted after his father’s death that he now wanted to be styled as “Marion.” Now it’s official. If Barry collects the necessary 500 signatures to make the ballot by the Jan. 28 deadline, he has asked to appear on the ballot as “Marion C. Barry,” according to the D.C. Board of Elections.

Barry’s entering a race that has recently swollen to include Barry protege Trayon White and former Vince Gray deputy chief of staff Sheila Bunn. Other likely frontrunners include Ward 8 Democrats president Natalie Williams and Muriel Bowser affiliate LaRuby May.

Barry has the biggest name out of any of them, but he also has his father’s penchant for run-ins with the law. Barry pleaded guilty to a DUI charge last month, the culmination of a legally troubled 2014 that found him allegedly caught with synthetic marijuana, allegedly failing to obey an officer during a dispute with police, and violating a stay-away order. Some of the charges were dropped after Barry’s December guilty plea.

In 2011, he pleaded guilty to drug possession after being caught with a vial of PCP and bags of marijuana.

Update, 3:05 p.m.: Bunn, who is part of her own prominent Ward 8 family, isn’t convinced that Barry’s name means the race is over. “He’s a good guy,” Bunn says. “But I don’t think that it is wrapped up.”
