LAST WEEK'S MYSTERY BAND: "As I sit in my new office in Las Vegas with Blue Man Group," writes our old pal 5ive (Isn't that about the coolest way to start a sentence?). 5ive continues:
I sneak a peek at the photo and realize that this is not really a band. Margaret and Harold Grainger of Linden, N.C., snapped this photo while vacationing in Murfreesboro, Tenn. This is really a pre-bronzed look of the new statues that will fill in the Confederate Army centerpiece of the park they were visiting. The leather is the new "updated" look that the artist was going for to popularize the attraction. Regardless, the "drummer" will be the first to be removed. The "cro-mag" forehead was a bit pre-Civil War, the artist decided after placement. He will be replaced with a crying nurse carrying a bucket of water and three tea bags. Please support your "National Parks." We support that notion. We think. In addition to Vegas, upstate New York (Kyle Rivera), Pennsylvania (Matthew Mayer), and Florida (Neil Hughes) also boasted spotters. Were there not any locals who guessed the band? Yesour old pal Jon Meyers. All of the above noticed that the band was ICED EARTH, featuring former Rob Halford replacement Tim "Ripper" Owens, who was himself replaced by Rob Halford! It's a wonderful, wacky world, iced or otherwise! In happy news, plucky Jami Broom has started a Yahoo! group, DCDRUMMERS. Jami says that the "purpose of this group is to share information only drummers would know, such as where to get the best deals on equipment, inside knowledge on venues/places to play around D.C., and just sharing ideas and chatting about bands/music in general." Sounds like a great idea! Thanks, Jami (who drums for the Cheats.) In sadder news, our old pal Tony Buckley writes in to inform us that "Spencer Dryden, drummer extraordinaire with Jefferson Airplane and New Riders of the Purple Sage, passed away Tuesday. An obituary can be found here. A good, brief biography can be found here. Respectfully, I think Spencer deserves a mention on the Spot the Drummer page." So he does. A moment of silence, please. Also noted, Saturday, Jan. 15, is Gene Krupa's birthday.
