"Ba-Da-Boom!"

Congratulations, drummer spotted.

Think you're so smart? Take a shot at guessing the band. It's worth a T-shirt if you do.

In the meantime, here's a reward: excerpts from The Band Never Dances, a 1989 young-adult novel by J.D. Landis, about teenage drummer Judy Valentine and her quest to join a band and/or find love. Or something like that. It was frankly kinda hard to follow.

"I just want to rock." I was so tired. I was here in this strange loft with an ex-drug addict who had died, and I was telling him the only truth I knew about myself. I just wanted to rock. I just wanted to rock with some good people.

People think that you have to play loud to practice the drums. You don't. You can play them the way a karate master fights, never landing a blow, or touching his opponent only very lightly, when the fact is the karate master can kill you with those very same blows.

There is nothing in the world...that is as joyous as playing the drums in a great rock and roll band. You are life itself. Boom boom boom. You get to wear the Drummer's Smile. You and only you.

Wear that "Drummer's Smile" proudly home
