Oh, the Shame
So I've just missed my first Fringe curtain.
Uploaded that last video, ran like a mad fool four blocks from the Warehouse to the Edison Gallery, thinking surely Lunch wouldn't start exactly on time.
(Trade secret: Most theaters build in a "hold," meaning the lights don't actually go down until 5 minutes or so after the advertised start time. Do not, repeat, do not, use this as an excuse to be late for the show. Because as we learn from today's story, children, you can't always count on it.)
Or maybe I was just more than five minutes late. Either way, I got there just as they were introducing the band. And Capital Fringe has a strict no-late-seating policy, so consider yourself warned. Learn from my example, my friends, so you don't have to suffer as I suffer.
Wait, you say, what band? Aha, I see I've neglected the basics:
Lunch is a new show from the same team who brought you the punk-rock musical of Titus Andronicus (Shawn Northrip, the one in the charming yearbook photo at right, and Shirley Serotsky). Apparently it's a middle-school musical. Takes place in the cafetorium. Adolescent-angst issues, and whatnot.
Fear not, though, it would still seem to be fairly punkalicious: As the house manager was turning me firmly but politely away, I heard the beginning bars of the first song. If I caught the title correctly, it's called "My Dead Dad" or "My Dad's Dead" or something like that. And the opening lyrics included the phrase "He told me I was grounded/now he's the one who's grounded."
So check out the Lunch schedule -- you'll probably find me catching up with a performance somewhere down the Fringe-y road...

yeah, i built 7 minutes of extra pre-show house music into my show in case we needed to hold, but found out last night they really mean it that they won't allow late seating. WON'T ALLOW IT. DOESN'T MATTER IF YOUR FRIEND IS PARKING AND YOU'VE ALREADY GOT YOUR TIX AND PROGRAMS. IF HE'S 30 SECONDS LATE, TOO BAD!
i totally respect this. perhaps if all dc theatre took this stance, people would be on time.

I saw a show at the wooly mammoth theatre today (Sill - it was really cool by the way...) and it seems they're letting people in late because so many people are showing up past curtain. Which is helpful if you're one of the late people, but distracting if you actually showed up on time.

Arrrggggghhhhh. We're bummed this happened, Trey. At least at our venue, they are being incredibly strict about this. We hope you can come back.

They are also being incredibly brusque with artists. We had 10 minutes to see if the light board still held our cues, had to start no later than 1 min after, and had 15 minutes to vacate.
