City Paper Review

The pink elephants on the blue-painted ceiling of this tiny Adams Morgan restaurant put you in mind of a childs bedroomwhich, given that the Antoine in the restaurants name refers to chef-owner Jerome Renaud-Gouds little boy, makes perfect sense. In fact, the pink elephants are an homage to the seductive charms of Delirium TremensChez Antoine claims to be the only restaurant in the city to carry the Danish beer on tapand their dcor is meant to replicate a hallucination. Really, now: To anyone who came of age in this city over the past 20 years, the idea of such good French food so cheap in Washington, D.C., might indeed be enough to make your head spin. Renaud-Goud, formerly a sous-chef at Le Relais, serves up crepes, both sweet and savory, along with simple, tasty sandwiches, a handful of salads, and a worthy potato gratin. Pricing of the crepes is determined by the number of fillings you choose; as is the case with boutique pizzas, the less complicated, the better. Renaud-Goud uses good, interesting cheesesreblochon and morbier among themand any of the crepes in which these play a supporting role is bound to be rewarding. Though every crepe is assembled to order, thats not the same as saying every crepe has been lifted hot from the pan; make sure yours is not dry around the edges. Another gripe: The eggy all-purpose batter is a better fit with the sweet than with the savory. The Nutella crepe is terrific, as is a variation with banana pure and chocolate. The homemade basil ice cream is a cool, fragrant counterpoint to so much richness.

We love this place. Everytime we're near Adams Morgan we have to stop in. You never know if it will be empty or packed, but the food and the beer are always killer. This past time the owner was enjoying/spilling many beers, and that just makes us like the place even more. I tend to like sweet crepes, so Nutella it is, though the savory ones are nice, too. Sadly, they've been without Blanc de Nieges (the BEST beer, which they usually have on tap) for a couple months now. Though it can be crazy busy, I love the waitresses. It's best when you can just chill at the bar and chat. One warning: the tables they have tend to seat big parties who linger. You may be in for a long wait, especially during the prime late-night snacking hours.

Don’t go to Chez Antoine if you’re very hungry--the signature crepes barely fill you up. However, for those looking for a light meal, the two-crepe (one sweet, one savory) special is a great deal. I especially enjoy the goat-cheese and tomato crepe, and their homemade nutella ice cream. However, their grocery-store quality bread is a bit of a disappointment.

If you like crepes and beer, you can't go wrong here. It's quaint, it's cool, and it's delicious. The service is great. If you dine alone, this is also a great place to go. The characters will entertain but not annoy. And the beer, is grand!

Chez Antoine is one of those places that I will keep coming back to time and time again. I first visited with a friend who honestly believed she didn't like beer...until she was introduced to its many other varieties. It was great to be in a place where I could steer her towards white beer, lambics, tripels...The bartender was friendly and helpful. She even gave me some grad school advice. It's like a little piece of France at an affordable price.

Having a local creperie with an outstanding beer collection is enough to get me out even in 15 degree weather. While in the past service has been slow, recently they have figured things out. Crepes are always quick to the table, quick to be eaten. Every beer has its own glass--something that speaks loads about the belgian approach to cuisine-- high quality ingredients count, but what you wash it down with is equally important.

This little French creperie in Adams Morgan is a real find. The crepes are great, and not expensive at all - they range from $6.50 to $13 for dinner. But the best part about this place is the beer. They have a huge list of the best Belgians and imports from other countries like Germany and Canada - it's the only place in the city I've seen Delirium Tremens on tap!!! I highly recommend this restaurant.

What I wanted was a low-key place for a quick tasty meal, and Chez Antoine delivered. The menu lists scores of crepes, but not exactly the one I wanted (chicken, swiss, and spinach); the server (who pleasantly and efficiently handled all 15 parties by herself) let me put together a custom order. The bill seemed a bit high for the quantity of food, but the quantity (and quality) of food was just right. I want to go back sometime for dessert.

Chez Antoine has definitely become a favorite place for dinner or even for just drinks or dessert. This place has a great feel to it; it always feels comfortable and exactly where I want to be. (That could either be the decoration, the music selection, or the service).

Their service is always friendly, helpful and attentive without being too overbearing.

And the menu...amazing! So many options with the really fresh ingredients. The desserts are killer, especially when you top anyone off with the homemade ice cream (try the nutella ice cream) and sorbets! The beer list is just as impressive--an unbelievable collection of imported beers to try (delerium tremens, chimay, duvel, unibroque, gouden carulous...yum).

Having a place with crepes, tasting wonderful and affordable is rare, and Chez Antoine is that place in DC. The list of beers is impressive, and I want to go back to try new ones!

The art when we went there was great, from a local artist, and we were told that local artist are promoted with rotating exhibits. This is a cool idea.

Gotta love Chez Antoine for a yummy late night Nutella crepe topped with Nutella ice cream, washed down with tasty coffee or one of dozens of unique microbrews! All ice creams and sorbets are handmade French-style, pure and intensely tasty!

Plus, gaze down on 18th Street passers-by from Chez Antoine's lofty window seat, one of the best tables in the Adams Morgan neighborhood.
