City Paper Review

Yeah, it’s a chain, and yeah, the barbecue snobs who scorn anything that’s not coming out of a shack on the side of a dirt road wouldn’t dare plop their purist asses down in one of these red vinyl booths, but let’s get two things straight, OK? It’s a local chain. And it’s damn good. The Memphis-style ribs come either wet or dry, and if they’re not always as juicy as they should be (hey, it happens), you can always send ’em on back for a different rack. The smoked chicken, though sometimes salty, is terrific, and it makes a nice sandwich, too. (Ask for the dinner roll as a substitute for the usual limp bread.) In recent years, a fried-catfish platter has been added to the menu, and it’s not just a bone tossed out to non-red-meaters but a dish that more than holds its own with all the smoked stuff. When it comes to sides, skip the coleslaw in favor of the sweet-corn relish or the french fries, the latter among the best in the area.

Great BBQ joint. It's a chain with a few locations in the area, but feels like a local place. Great deals! We had bbq nachos, wings, bbq pork, ribs, beans, coleslaw, and berry cobbler. The house beer is great and sodas come in a pitcher with a straw. It's awesome! I ate so much I felt sick, but it was worth it. I took home leftovers that were enough for 2 more meals. Prices are good for the amount of food you get.

After so much hype this place was a serious let-down. I ordered the ribs but didn't realize that I was ordering them shellacked. The glaze was dried out and hardened to the point of it being closer to fiberglass plastic than a sauce. We told the waiter that it was inedible and he brought the cook out. Meeting the cook was intimidating since it's obvious that he came out because we told the waiter that the food stank but he was nice and offered new ribs to make up for the tragedy that was the first plate. After agreeing the resulting second plate was the same as the first, inedible.

The back part of the Restaurant closed, so they moved us to the front part. After sitting for about 20 minutes with no drinks and no waitress in sight, we contemplated leaving, but the waitress showed up. She brought our drinks about ten minutes later, took out food orders, and disappeared for another 40 minutes. Once again, just as we were about to leave, she showed up with our orders. The food is great, ambiance is terrific, but go to another location. The service at this one is abysmal.

This is a local favorite for Southern-inspired BBQ and blues. The meats and sides are wonderful, and the new banana pudding transported me back to my grandmother's kitchen table. Visitors to the area should definitely stop here, and this is a great grab and go place when you want simple, good food for a reasonable price. A great value spot!
