I've eaten here several times and always enjoyed my lunches. The menu has standard sandwiches (turkey, tuna) but has more creative fare to tickle your tastebuds. The empanadas were flaky and served with a simple mixed greens salad and vinegarette. One item I will always buy is a peanut butter cookie--two perfect cookies with fresh chunky peanut butter in the middle. Divine! It is a bit of a walk from the metro, but extremely well worth it.

My favorite place for lunch - I could go every day and, because of the frequent menu changes, never be bored. The food is delicious, the ingredients are fresh and of good quality, and the service is speedy - don't be intimidated by the long line.

A delightful lunch place. Very busy and bustling but some unique sandwiches and salads available. Had the Italian sausage sandwich..redolent with spices and onions.

This is a place that can best be appreciated by people over 28, preferably those who have been to Europe at least once- because they think the food is better there. The folks behind Breadline take their dough SERIOUSLY, and they are producing loaves that, in my opinion, are the best in the city. Hands down. If you are someone who can actually tell the difference between a french bakery baguette and the knock off dough-sticks that places like Firehook crank out, you will really like Breadline. Yes its plus cher, and no, they won't make changes to any of their daily sandwich offerings, so if these things are more important to you than how good your food tastes, you will probably be better served along with the rest of the folks who inexplicably wait in long lines for lousy sandwichs at Potbelly.

Good food usually, occasionally excellent but occasionally mediocre too. Too much attitude, too inconsistent, and too crowded to make it attractive as a regular place to eat, even though my office is a short walk away. For takeout or a crowded table, it is also not cheap.

Breadline makes the best sandwiches in the DC area. Their bread is second to none, and the sandwiches are all filled with first rate ingedients. The cost reflects this, with sandwiches costing from $7-$10 (just for the sandwiches). People either think it's overpriced & not worth it, or very underpriced for the amount and quality of food (I'm somewhere in the middle). Today I had a tomato & mozzarella sandwich, which was served with pesto mayo (yum) and shreds of iceburg lettuce (uhhh). The lettuce did not work at all, iceburg is bad enough, but the fact they were in shreds just made it a mess. Cost: $7.50
Their softshell crab sandwiches are quite popular during the summer months, but they often sellout at the beginning of the season, and the crabs are sometimes teensy weensy. The pizzas are a good deal, and extremely filling. If I worked in the area I would probably go often, but it is not worth more than the occasional visit otherwise. The desserts look better than they taste & I always regret the wasted calories. The oft-mentioned mascarpone cookie was not all-that when I tried it, it was dry. I've also tried the strawberry cheesecake, the chocolate cupcake, and an apple pie: all very average. The salads seem to be very popular, but I've never tried them due to the salad line always being very long. Oh, the lemonade is fresh & awesome, I get it every time.

I went to Breadline with very, very high expectations, having heard rave reviews on it from the Washington Post, Washingtonian, and other sources. And I can't say I was displeased, but I also didn't see what all the hype is about. Yes, the bread was great, the portions were generous, and some of the sandwiches were unusual, but I don't think it lived up to its huge reputation as a formidable giant in the lunch choices in downtown DC. If you want a very tasty sandwich, but one that's quite pricey, Breadline is your place. The chocolate cookie with marscapone filling I had for dessert was the most delicious part of my meal. Rich and chocolatey, chewey, but with a good crumb, it was just what I was craving. My egg salad sandwich (which features very large chunks of egg) was fine, the lentil soup was fine (slightly spicey with many large chunks of andouille and nicely cooked carrot), and the freshly made lemonade quenched my thirst (a tiny bit tart, but mostly sweet). But those things didn't rock my world. I'm glad I tried it, but I wouldn't make a special trip to go back, unlike many of the restaurant reviewers and fans of the Breadline.
