City Paper Review

This lively, likable place—a destination for nearby Catholic University faculty and students, and for the residents of Brookland, black and white alike—has spread its roots deep in the neighborhood over the last couple of decades while providing the sort of reliable if unremarkable pub food and street-corner atmosphere this town largely lacks. Burgers, sandwiches, potato skins, and nachos are, predictably, the way to go here, washed down with any of the beers on tap. The crab-cake platter is fronted by a well-formed but gluey round of backfin. Service is alternately neglectful, friendly, hoveringly solicitous, and clumsy; don’t be surprised if you’re unable to flag your waiter, only to have another server swoop down upon your half-empty glass of Coke not once but twice to refill it with weak iced tea. Desserts have always been a strength, and the warm apple cobbler (its sugariness offset somewhat by liberal shakes of cinnamon and nutmeg) is as satisfying and soothing as anything being served up elsewhere, and with far greater fanfare, in the name of dessert.

Great place to grab a drink after seeing a performance at Dance Place and is much better than the neighboring Island Jim's bar. The crab cake sandwich is a favorite. Also to point out - the seasoned fries came out without much seasoning at all. Service is not that great.

We had been moving all day and needed a quick, reliable place where we could get a good meal and some good beer. Colonel Brooks hit the spot!

This is a great local bar, with daily specials and ambience-- as long as you sit on the ground floor. Get a table with a window seat and you have a great view out on Brookland. We had the pan-seared tuna, which was a very healthy portion, and good to boot! The rice with it was a bit "crunchy" sometimes, but overall very good. The crab dip appetizer served in a bread bowl is awesome! The chocolate mousse for dessert is just good, leaving something to be desired-- but was all gone at the end of the meal, nonetheless! We'll definitely go back.

If you haven’t seen a room full of septuagenarians whirl their napkins in glee as the Dixieland jazz band clarinetist rips though a solo, well, then you haven’t been to Colonel Brook’s on a Wednesday evening.
