Two main problems with this location of a great chain: (1) The noise level is very high, making conversation--one of the main reasons for coming to a cafe--difficult at best. (2) The serving staff is still learning. I had to ask four times to get a cafe au lait delivered. The server brought the wrong food. Then, after it was clear we had all finished, another server tried to deliver more food (intended for another table). Give this location time to find itself.

Even in crowded Georgetown, the staff does not hurry you. Great place to meet and talk.

We loved the ambience, and the food was absolutely amazing. It looked great, it tasted awesome, and it was organic. Overall it felt like we were eating in some small town in France or Belgium, fresh delicious food straight from the farm. The service, however, was pretty awful. Our waiter barely spoke any English, so we had to keep repeating our orders, and sometimes he still got things wrong. Maybe it's more authentic that way, but it didn't help us. Also, the busboys kept trying to snatch our food and drinks away before we were done. We'd eat half the dish, turn around to talk for a moment, and they'd be already carrying away the rest by the time we turned back around. We did manage to rescue most of our food, but some did disappear before we had a chance to finish eating and drinking.

It's a nice place for a quick lunch, I always had the tartines, but I have to admit, that even if they are good, they are not big enough for a lunch. You have to take a soup or a dessert. And it starts getting no so cheap for a lunch.
The salads are big though and the bread is excellent, the best ever in DC.
For dessert i highly recommand the pistachio marzipan, it is really a great pastry, the belgian brownie is also excellent...

The food and ambiance of this Washington newcomer match those of the other locations I've visited in NYC and Brussels. What's different here is that the service is perfectly horrible. Friendly wait staff just don't know which side is up. Nice people but unattentive and oh, so slow. Three visits, and it's been that way 2 times out of 3. The one exception was an early dinner when they were not busy. This is not a place to go when time matters. First you wait for a table, then you wait for service. Bummer! It's a management thing, doncha know?
