City Paper Review

There are restaurants you go to for gastronomic epiphanies, and there are restaurants you go to because, well, they make you happy. A.V. Ristorante Italiano, the old-school Italian joint that’s sat on New York Avenue NW for nearly six decades, is the latter. The atmosphere alone makes a trip worthwhile: wood paneling, red-checkered tablecloths, and soft opera floating through the air. In the winter, the mammoth fireplace has often been ablaze, and in the summer you can sit outside on a patio complete with a splashing fountain. A few employees are delightfully weathered and surly. And the food, if you order wisely, is down-home and delicious. Strangely, a good rule of thumb is to avoid the pasta. The spaghetti is bland, and the gnocchi is dense. The pizza, thin and loaded with toppings, is a safe bet, as is any veal or pork dish. The saltimbocca, layered with prosciutto and mozzarella, is tender, while the porchetta al forno is flavored with garlic and rosemary. As a bonus, the house red is smooth and perfectly drinkable. But to experience this historic taste of Italy, you’ll have to go soon—A.V. will be closing July 28.

I was very disappointed in my trip to AV. It's always been raved about, but it was not so great. Service was extremely slow, and it wasn't that busy in there. I ordered gnocci (my favorite pasta) and it came out completely undercooked. It took a long time for a waiter to come by out table so I could mention it. When I returned it, the waiter stared blankly at me, not offering any suggestion of what to do. My friends all ordered pizza, which I munched off of and it had a very funny taste to it.
Sorry, thumbs down, at least for this visit.

The food is average Italian, a bit greasy even, but the ambience is terrific. If you don't want to look at who your eating with, go here. It's so dark! Complete mafioso atmosphere with a pic of Janet Reno eating there on the wall. Limos parked outside all the time... Sit by the fireplace in the winter-- it's surreal. Big glasses of house wine for cheap, too.

It's dark, sometimes to the point of squinting, so it's hard to judge the food by appearance. But, one taste of their sauce and I was hooked. Our table ordered pizza, the jumbo cheese ravioli & knocchi. The pizza was a little overcooked, but still quite tasty. The ravioli & knocchi were wonderful!

I am always surprised when long-time DC residents say they have never visited this "closest to a New York-Italian-restaurant that DC has to offer." the value and the ambiance is old world charming. I go back again and again for the simple and ample Italian dishes and wonderful house reds (available by the carafe if one is so-inclined.) to know it is to love it.

AV is like a dependable old (and good) friend that might be battered by the years and looking a little rough around the edges but you love them still because of their earnest goodness and above all else, their sincerity. AV's food is solid and authentic. It's the real thing, not a fake like Bucco di Beppo.

This is the type of place where you expect someone to come out of the mens room carrying a machine gun and blow the place to bits (i.e. straight outta "Scarface" or the "Godfather" or some similar movie). It is every bit of a homestyle southern italian restautant anyone could hope for. Straw covered Chianti bottles, red & white check tablecloths, opera playing in the background. The food is good solid home style italian cooking too. Be sure to try the Scampi fra Diavola and the Snapper.
