City Paper Review

In its infancy, and even through its first flush of success, it was hard to find anyone who didn’t love this funky little place, which gave the city its first taste of chipotle and tomatillo and taught us that you could put pretty much anything into a taco, including, best of all, a little smoked duck. Now in its 17th year, and with locations in Baltimore in addition to the six in the D.C. area, the Austin Grill is a victim of its own expansionist fantasies. The original menu, which was conceived by chef Ann Cashion and reflected a sense of whimsy and adventure, has been streamlined and, worse, mainstreamed—the ubiquitous chimichanga is now a mainstay, and there have been specials along the lines of “Buffalo Chicken Tacos.” What’s more, the various kitchens are maddeningly inconsistent. (The original location, in Glover Park, has been largely immune to a lot of the problems elsewhere.) Some dishes remain as good as they ever were: the enchiladas, made not with cheddar but with salty, authentic queso fresco, the huevos rancheros, and the fiery-hot Texas chili, with its long-simmered cubes of beef. And the intensely eggy and creamy homemade vanilla ice cream is worth a trip all by itself.

The original location of Austin Grill (the one in Glover Park) remains the BEST of all of 'em. Although I have been begging for more veggie options for years, I am never disappointed with what they currently offer. Service is consistently good and friendly, and the atmosphere is great kitsch. Be sure to ask for their salsa verde, as they may not always bring it to the table with the complimetary chips and (traditional) salsa. their stars and bars (frozen margarita) is fantastic, but then again, you can't go wrong with any of their fresh margarita concoctions....I HIGHLY reccomend the High Test Margarita, which comes in a mini-shaker and a martini glass, salt optional.

I have to admit I frequent Austin Grill. Since I have eaten there so often, I now generally go exclusively for brunch. Though food is certainly yummy during the rest of the day, I find that brunch has my Austin Grill favorites. I specifically recommend the "Texas" Toast. It is the "Texas" version of French Toast served with Pecan Butter, syrup and bacon. I just can't get enough of it.

The atmosphere is also a perk during brunch. It is a nice quiet place to go when you just partied too much the night before. There is always someone willing to chat at the bar, a game on a few tvs and a movie you haven't seen in a while on another.

My final comment is my good friend from Texas likes their food. She even suggests the restaurant. Since she never likes any restaurant that claims they serve Tex-Mex, because it is not truly Tex-Mex, I say it must receive 4 Sporks and an additional Ork (or half-Spork) just for that alone.

This location of the local chain is offering half price on all meals ordered before 7pm - every night. The place was virtually empty - too bad, most likely because there is no outdoor seating and that was a lovely day. Still, the deal made my husband's rack of ribs and my shrimp tacos so affordable that we treated ourselves to appetizers and margaritas, too.

Sitting outside was lovely and the sangria was strong, but Georgetown's Austin Grill is a disappointment for the price. My date and I both had fajitas, he shrimp and me vegetable. Good, but nothing remarkable. Salsa had a bite to it, but was very soupy. Our waiter was friendly, but hard to track down when we needed him. It's a cool-looking restaurant, but the food and cocktails are not worth the expense. I'd skip it next time.

The ambiance is just great...it is a neighborhood place, with a lot of friendly faces. Not only is the food great, but the staff is so outgoing and nice. The restaurant is always packed with families and the bar is a great laid-back hang-out for twenty and thirty-somethings (And beyond)!
