This little gem is a bit out of the way but I would make an argument that it is well worth catching the 42 bus to Mount Pleasant! I am told that the owners have recently brought in a new manager and revamped the menu. The staff were all overly friendly and very attentive. It was possibly the best service I've had anywhere in DC. My girlfriend and I randomly dropped in for dinner this weekend. First we started with the basement entrance that is more of a bar atmosphere and (by the way I give the bar 2 thumbs up!) from there we headed to the the dining room upstairs that was reasonably quiet considering the loud bar downstairs. This was a great treat starting with a appetizer of tater tots (hey don't laugh they are awesome) with a trio of custom dipping sauces. A great horseradish/spicey mustard, chili/tobasco/chipotle ketchup, and bacon ranch dressing. Oh' and the portions are huge! For the main course, I had the BLT which is pretty substantial with Arugula and a 1/4 inch slab of bacon smoked cured and smoked in house on thick fresh pumpernickel and a great spicey mayo dressing. My partner had the Truffled Macaroni & Cheese with Bacon (minus the bacon so they are veggie friendly despite meat heavy menu)that was equally delicious along with a yummy salad that was substantial enough to be a meal of it's own almost. The dessert menu is limited, but no worries, the selections are all fabulous. We shared the Blueberry and peach Shortbread. (with homemade whipped cream might I add) They also add comp coffee with all the deserts (a very classy touch!) With all this plus 2 Jameson on the rocks and a Redhook IPA., our total came to $60.50 (I bumped it to 75.00 with a larger than customary tip.) You could easily get out of there for under $20.00 a person including tip. (most if not all items on the menu were $12.00 or less with an average of 9.00 or 10.00) I'm planning on dropping back in on Tuesday for their wine night. (bring a friend, order any 2 entree's and they comp you a bottle of wine... not too shabby I think) Oh' and I'm also told that Tuesday's are 50 cent Taco night in the bar down stairs. Can we say new destination Restaurant for the intern crowd!

Great place for brunch, in order to sit upstairs, you have to get there early since the dining room has a small seating capacity...and the wait service can be forgetful and slow at times...but the food is worth it.

A friend and I ordered take-out from the bar. The service was quick and attentive. My friend ordered a BBQ chicken pizza (which was probably his own mistake). The pizza was dry and lacked flavor. It looked like bbq sauce and chicken on a piece of cardboard. I ordered chicken quesadillas. They were served with what seemed to be fresh, homemade chunky guacuomole, sour cream and a heap of baby lettuce leaves- no salsa! After 2-3 bites I began to wonder if the bartender heard me order chicken quesadillas as I didn't see or taste any. It wasn't until my second piece that I found a bit of chicken. The cheese seemed flavorless as well.
Don't completely abandon this place, besides its great location, it has friendly staff, specifically the female bartender. It offers a fun bar setting for drinking- but that's about it.

We had a terrific time here. Our waitress was witty and attentive, the physical surroundings were pleasant (if a bit uncrowded for a Saturday night), and the food was wonderful. I had the vegetarian stuffed peppers, with sharp and tasty tomato sauce and myriad excellent flavors all around. The only downside was that I got just one stuffed pepper in this entree, and I was still hungry afterwards. Luckily my dinner partner offered me some of his baked beans (a divine blend of sweet and salty), and mashed potatoes (creamy and yummy). On the whole, a delicious vegetarian meal. A caveat: The dessert menu is underwhelming (mostly frozen popsicles and ice cream sandwiches...).

The chicken tastes fried, but it's baked with black pepper instead of paprika in its crunchy-dunchy topping and oh my blessed....it's good! And the Caesar salad was presented on real romaine hearts tasting of, oh my stars, real anchovies in the dressing. Hasn't anybody told the good folks at Tonic that they're in D.C., and hence must execute funky dishes well or staple dishes poorly? No? then shh--keep the secret awhile longer...

Love it! Great neighborhood spot, awesome comfort food. The meatloaf is made perfectly and the mac and cheese makes me want to run back for more. They had a wonderful apple white Belgian beer, and I've found that their specialty cocktails are just delicious. Upstairs is better for talking, downstairs has a swell jukebox and a great bar-vibe.

Tonic, is the quintessential neighborhood restaurant and bar. I can walk, the food is great, they have banana french toast to die for, and great grits, Saturday and Sunday! You can watch anything from ESPN to the Democratic Convention, to the NBA Playoffs. Everyone is friendly, and the bartenders always remember your name.

Good Saloon style atmosphere, with a better than average 'bar food' menu. The service was bleak, but that seemed to be limited to out particular server.

Had to wait a long time to get our food - over an hour. We sat outside, and were several times accosted by passing bums. The food, however, was good, and I was impressed with the large menu and assortment of "comfort foods." Pizzas, meatloaf, pork chops, mac and cheese, bbq sandwich. There is more on the menu than the one shown on their web site. A valuable addition to MtP.

They have a kids night on Wednesday night which is a nice thing for families.
It was a rainy cold June night when I went so the macaroni and cheese and tater tots really hit the spot. Food was great but there needs to be a cot in the corner so you can curl up and take a nap after your meal.

One of the hotter days this season, you would think the restaurant would have air conditioning. The waitress was overwhelmed by a whopping three tables to cover, we never got our drinks and had to steal silverware from other tables. The food is good, but the whole experience was not so enjoyable that I would bring guests back.
Happy Hour is really happy when there are $2 beers and $3.50-$4.50 burgers (veggie or beef--with tater tots!) that taste excellent at a bar just a few blocks from home. Nice flatscreen TVs for watching O's games or NBA finals. Only complaints were unripe tomato on my otherwise delicious hamburger and the need for fans in the too-hot bar area. Bartenders/waitresses are friendly and don't care if you move from the bar to a table. I didn't check out the restaurant area upstairs.

Home cooking, city style. Upstairs a homey but hip restaurant, downstairs a cool neighborhood bar with a nice happy hour.
Dinner choices include interesting options like mac & cheese with fontina (delish) and chili to die for. Appetizers (like quesadillas, pizza and chicken wings are great bar food).
The Big Breakfast platter is an amazing and delicious choice - it's plenty for two people to share. The best buckwheat pancakes and maple syrup i've ever had.
A little disappointing that they don't serve their trademark tater tots with the sandwiches at brunch - it was the whole reason I went that day!
Veggie burger leaves a bit to be desired but the other burgers put fast food to shame. All in all, worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood.
Tonic is fairly new and relatively secluded, so that would explain the few diners there on Tuesday night (free bottle of house white or red with the purchase of two entrees, and though I am not a wine connoisseur, I'm certainly developing a taste and appreciation for the Great Grape and the house red went perfectly with both our dinner selections). I would recommend the quesadillas for an appetizer (the guacamole was delicious!) and for your main dish, the rockfish is succulent and perfectly cooked. Staff were attentive and after dinner, the bar downstairs is great for a soothing cocktail before heading home.

A new restaurant in my neighborhood, Mt. Pleasant, always prompts multiple visits and the cozy basement bar area never fails to make me feel welcome. What makes this a really fun place is the humorous, friendly service. Even when I'm dining alone, I never feel alone

The place is GREAT!!! Down home entrees with a hip flair. I suggest the tater tots, you can't make them taste this good at home!! The bar is small, but a friendly atmophere! The owner, Bernie, is a riot and you feel as if you have known him all your life! The food is FABULOUS and VERY cheap!!!

We went to Tonic for brunch with no idea what it would be like and we were pleasently surprised. We chose to sit on the make shift patio, a section of the sidewalk roped off and it was a little crowded with three and people walking by but the food was good brunch food with good vegan and veggie options.

We ate at the bar portion on the lower level...there is also a sit-down restaurant on the second floor (where on Tuesdays you can get a free bottle of wine with 2 dinner entrees!).
The bar menu has many standards, like wings (which are good), but also little pleasant surprises for a DC bar (like two chili-cheese hot dogs served with tater tots). The drinks are also cheaper than average.
Right now the place isn't very crowded, and mostly attracts locals from Mt Pleasant. If more of these places open on Mt Pleasant St, one can expect a more Adams-Morgan-esque feel to this place and others.
