Far from a Mexican food connoisseur, I rate my Mexican restaurant experience based mainly on atmosphere. The vegetarian options at Alero were pretty standard - rice and beans or rice and beans. That said, the rice and beans were delicious, the atmosphere was relaxed and service was great. Watch out for the cocktail prices - they're surprisingly high.

Probably this is the best Tex-Mex in DC. There isn't much good that I've found though! I do return frequently to Alero and it's a fun spot - good service, acceptable food. The frozen margaritas are pretty good, not too weak, not too strong. Try the tipicos, the more Mexican typical dishes for interesting variety. Their nachos are often under cooked, but other than that, I've had little to complain about.

While I had already heard good things about this restaurant, I was not prepared for this experience. I am convinced it's the tastiest Mexican restaurant I've ever been to, and it is joining the ranks of my all-time favorite restaurants. In addition, while it is a good restaurant for us meat-eaters, the vegetarians in our party also came away quite happy. All the better that the place is smokefree!

Alero is a great place to grab a relatively quick meal before the mad rush of dinner starts. At least that is what we did. The portions were pretty big and filling and the prices are pretty darn cheap. Washington has no EXCELLENT Mexican food... but for DC, this place is pretty good. Chips and salsa definitely quality!

My all-time favorite because of the food. It is by far the best tasting Mexican food I've ever eaten. I put it way ahead of the next best Mexican restaurant I've tried anywhere. Not expensive but so very excellent. Superb fajitas, enchiladas, quesa dija and more. This is THE only place to consider when dining Mexican. I can't praise it too highly. Go with great expectations. It will excede them. And when they say best margarita in town they mean it.

In a city with a dirth of quality Mexican food, Alero reigns on top. The Dupont Circle location is tops for food, incredibly attentive and engaging waiters, and a super pitcher of gold margaritas. The food is almost frightenly quick, so take your time when ordering, otherwise you'll get everything before you're finished with your appetizers! Highly recommend if you're looking for cheap, decent Mexican downtown.

Food at this neighborhood restaurant is fairly average. Salsa is interesting, actually more like tomato soup in taste and consistency, which has good and bad points. We had decent cheese dip. My chimichanga had decent flavor, although the texture could have been better. The mixed meat skewer looked and smelled pretty good. Service was a bit spotty, with our waitress disappearing at check time. We finally asked a different waitress for the check and paid it. A few minutes later, our waitress finally came over and asked if we wanted the check. Ah well. The surroundings are pleasant, the food is decent but nothing special.

You may go for the awesome margaritas, but the food, especially the fajitas, is also worth the trip

This was my sixth visit to Alero (Dupont location) in my 18 months living in DC. The service is impeccable everytime (if you want the royal treatment ask for Fabiano). The quality and selection of margaritas are the best I seen in this city. They also provide more than enough of food for the price.

Recently I posted a review here saying that my dining experience here was pretty good except for an Alero's employee who was smoking. I walked by last week and saw a "Smokefree" sign on the window, so I had dinner there last night. I'm pleased to report that it is indeed smokefree.
My date was very pleased with her meal, she normally doesn't like Mexican food, but said she'd definitely go back.

We went to Alero after a long day, so all I wanted was some good food and drinks. HA! not there. The food was pretty bad, but usually I can get past that but there should NEVER be an excuse for bad service. The waiter seemed as if he was in a hurry. When we received our food, no one in my party liked their dish, but it seemed as if the waiter didn't care. He didnt even look over at us to refill our water! He was too busy watching Sportscenter at the bar! Its not as if he was extremley busy, it was a monday night for pete's sake! Anyway when we finally flagged the waiter down for our check he looks at our plates and asked if we wanted our food wrapped to go. We both said no, we didnt like the food, and then he simply says "ok" and goes to throw the food away. I dont know what i was expecting him to say, maybe "I'm sorry can we get you something else" or "I'm sorry____" but he just said "ok" it was a wretched experience. Had the service not been so poor, i might have gone back to Alero for a second try, but now--i will never eat there again!

Alero's has pretty good Mexican food, and good margaritas. (As a California transplant, it's hard to find great Mexican food in DC!). I prefer Mixtec in Adams Morgan, but it was very cold out an Alero's is close to my house.
I used to go to Alero's more often before they allowed smoking. There was no one smoking during our meal (one guy left the bar smoked outside, even though smoking is allowed inside, I think for his date's sake). But just as we were finishing up, one of the Alero's employees lit up. Now, I can understand a restaurants decision to let patrons light up (even though I disagree with it), but I can't figure out why an owner would let his employees stink up a place.
I'm sure someday Alero's will be smokefree (their bar is in the center of the restaurant, so if anyone is smoking, everyone is smoking), and I'm sure I'll be back then.
