What do people see in this place? I am gay and still don't get it. The food sucks and the wait staff is not very friendly.

Duplex Diner is one of Dupont's great area hangouts. Those who know it, know it well and visit often! A great venue for a relatively inexpensive meal, or just come to see your friends and enjoy a couple of cocktails. Duplex just underwent a facelift this summer, which included some new additions to the menu as well. Duplex seems to have been closed pretty often this year, or closes early with no notice, which is disappointing. Don't confuse them with "The Diner" up the street!

Duplex Diner just went through a major renovation, although you will take great pains to find why the owner spent so much money to turn a plain yet warm, industrial space into a tacky, nauseating industrial space. The menu changed only a little and is a mixed bag. Entrees like the sirloin salad, burgers and pork chops are excellent, while items such as the quesadillas and pasta are horrible. The clientele is very gay and on any given night the place will be overwhelmingly packed with gay, white guys who appear to see Duplex as part of their scene. On certain nights (especially Thu, Fri, Sat), good luck trying to get to the bar while you are waiting for the table, since the bar area will be clogged with people. However, if you do manage to get to there, the drinks are quite well-made and worth the price. The service is good overall and if you order the right things you are likely to be more pleased than displeased with the overall experience.

The service was GREAT.
The food was bland, expensive for the portions. This place is more for "cruising" and being seen than for eating.
Did I metion that the service was GREAT?

They do make a wicked Bloody Mary! :)

The paper napkins at the Duplex Diner are the best-quality paper I have ever felt. And similarly, this diner excels at fancied up versions of comfort food, such as macaroni and cheese, or meatloaf--A pricier, somewhat tastier, alternative to Adams Morgan’s other Diner

The food here is simple and I really liked the grilled cheese sandwich. The tomato soup was a bit like Campbell's and the bbq chicken did not make an impression. Great free bowl of pickles. The value is good since most entrees are not expensive. The drinks here are unique and tasty and the decor is very trendy. The crowd here doesn't pick up until late and the mood here is very festive. This place is more like a bar than a restaurant. You know this place is very popular if you have to yell to have a conversation--and not mind about it.
