Supposedly this place is planet toolbox on the weekends, but I went for a business lunch and must confess I was pleasantly surprised; the food is good. Really, really good. I'm glad their risotto with veal is one of the last things I had before making a New Year's resolution to give up meat. The large open area facing the street is really nice as well.

I went late Sunday night because I knew they had beef carpaccio and had a huge craving for raw meat. Sliced paper thin, topped with shaved parmesan and arugula. Just a squeeze of lemon, a touch of olive oil, topped off with fresh pepper. I got what I wanted, for $18!!! I was willing to pay $15 even, but never have I ever paid this much for approximately 5 mm of filet uncooked. I know this is Milano, the place to be seen, not for the food. But that was ridiculous. There are plenty of other restaurants in DC that serve the exact same beef carpaccio, and never will I ever go back to fill my cravings again. Not to mention, their wine list has some of the most mediocre wines at outrageous prices. I paid for a glass for what I could have bought the bottle. I know there is mark up, I am a veteran of the restaurant business, and really, I believe that you are being swindled.

The classic DC/Georgetown restaurant. Eating in the main dining room, "The Domingo Room," or the outside are all great options, and the back room is great if you're looking for a more private, relaxed experience. Over the past couple of years, the menu prices have at least gotten tolerable and the variety has provided many excellent options. As a vegetarian, my classic favorites are the off-the-menu cappellini with tomatoes and veggies (chef's choice), and the tomato salad (when they have it.) Also, they do unusual items well, like pasta with wild mushrooms and unknown shellfish stews.

Cafe Milano excels in its treatment of the fresh and light - the warm seafood salad is always a favorite and the specials always provide something interesting. Check out the carpaccios for something a little different, and the meats have always seemed to be of good quality.

Best of all is the service and ambience. I've come to know many of the waiters, who are always warm and generous with their hectic service (excluded are the food runners - these guys run around at top speed with hot plates and grimaces). A drinker of sparkling water from the bottle, I never even have to pour my own glass - and I often miss them come by to fill me up - this is how service should be. My hat's off to Laurent, Micheal, Teddy, Tribi, and the rest.

Cafe Milano offers an interesting mix of exquisite dining with a slight meat market feel. But that can be a good thing. Definitely sip on the best wines or champagne with your meal and soak up the atmosphere--which will keep you entertained. The full dinner menu is also at the bar so try that if the tables are full. Sitting at a table near the bar is basically sitting at the bar as you will have rear-ends hovering behind your head. The halibut and the veal are good choices, and the salads and pizzas are great too for a lower price option.
