Mixtec is like a dream come true to a legless farmer with a sunburn shaped like Elmo's left leg. My mom has been quoted as saying "Mixtec?! You went to Mixtec and didn't invite ME!?" Okay that's actually a lie, I don't think my mom has ever even heard of Mixtec. But don't let that fool you! She's deaf. That's a lie too. At any rate... if you like football and seabass (as who doesn't) come on down to Mixtec and try your hand at these great big flaming baskets of carp (that's CARP not crap)! You'll be sorry you did! Mixtec gets an A+ for effort in my book! Also a B- in Gym.

I've been to Mixtec a number of times and have never been that impressed (other than their crazy eggs with steak type breakfasts which are good--not healthy, but good). I've usually gotten a burrito or fajitas and they've been ok...but nothin' special and while the ambience is fine, it's pretty basic. Tonight, though, I had the bistec con salsa verde (steak with green sauce...) which was REALLY good. The salsa verde is tangy--made with tomatillos, cilantro and onions and the steak, while not a fancy cut, is tasty. I also have been there before and gotten the mejillones (mussels with some type of semi-spicy tomato based sauce) which are also really good and definitely not something you find in your average American Mexican place. SO...I think the key here is to stay away from the stuff that you see everywhere (like fajitas, etc...) and focus on things which are a bit more unusual. The prices aren't super cheap but most of the over $11 dishes are quite big and could easily be shared. It's a nice low key neighborhood place; I'll definitely be going back more often to taste other good stuff on the menu.
The staff seemed very nice and down-to-earth; even when I've been there and have not been wowed by the food it's been friendly and fast.

I live about 200 feet from this place and I've been there plenty. They serve good Tex-Mex but the pitchers of Margaritas are awesome. You'll walk in and then crawl out.

Mixtec has good, reliable food with a good selection of beer. It's location is very convenient to all the other locations in Adams Morgan and, my favorite perk: It's open for lunch!! (so rare in this area)

I ordered a vegetarian taco, and the cheese was amazing!!! Freshly grated with a wider tooth grater, so one could actually bite into a shred of cheese. It was delicious. Next, the rice was perfect--fluffy and flavorful, a wonderful compliment to the black beans and the subtle, fresh guacamole. Some really great ingredients combined for a really great meal! Only bummer: no standard chips and salsa that one'd expect at a Mexican restuarant. But chips did come on the side of the entree. All in all, Mixtec makes a quality meal.

Take Mixtec at face value - a clean spot to get your Mexican fix. A smiling server and entertaining posters and decorations made for a pleasant enough atmosphere. But the menu, although seemingly inventive with Aztec-inspired dishes, manages to be little more than a Tex Mex re-hash of beans, rice, cheese, and starchy, tasteless tortillas.
The broiled cheese with mushrooms starter has a tendency to congeal in the back of your throat before you can chew or swallow it, like an over-mozzarella'ed slice of pizza. Tortilla soup is nice, but nothing special. And woe to the unsuspecting vegetarian who thinks she's getting anything more than souped-up nachos and a pound of rice in ordering vegetable tacos. The meat dishes - enchiladas and burritos - have no kicky ingredient or spice to merit the $10+ you'll pay for them. And don't even think about drinks - I couldn't bear the thought of paying $4 for a Corona when that plus $.50 would buy me six of them at a store up the street.
All in all, Mixtec just doesn't live up to the hype. If you're looking for more interesting Latin food, I'd recommend moseying a little farther away from the Adams Morgan drag strip and toward the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood for delicious and cheap Salvadoran, Peruvian and Guatemalan.

So my boyfriend and I were on the verge of breaking up; I decided for dinner rather than "quickie-for-old-time's-sake". Needless to say, Adams Morgan's Mixtec restaurant has kept us together, and I still got my quickie :)!
Mixtec's margaritas are off the richter and the chicken enchilada dinner is to die for. We ended the night sharing a chocolate mousse (rated best in DC) with strawberries and yes, we are still together. Thank you Mixtec.

Try the avocado-cheese-blackbean sandwich.

Very down-to-earth and authentic latin joint. No yuppiefied Lauriol Plaza this. Start off with the yummy soup (Sopa something). Charging for chips and salsa is lame, but this is Mom and Pop, not a generic chain.

Friends from Santa Fe noted this was the BEST mexican they had on the east coast, on par with food they would get back home. The mole sauce is world renowned, as it should be - it's amazing. And the vegetarian burrito - mmmmmm! I can't say enough good things about Mix-Tec. It's the best restaurant in DC!
I can't remember the bill total, but the price is never too much, especially for the quantity and quality of the food.

This is an Adams Morgan restaurant that actually serves its neighborhood. Bustling at mealtimes, it is pleasantly busy--activists and artists meeting for tete-a-tetes, Latino families, solitary office workers--all afternoon. The waitstaff is unfailingly friendly and efficient, and if the food quality is a little uneven (especially at lunch), at least the place is refreshingly poseur-free.

Nay sayers will decry the lack of free chips and salsa; they see only the chicken and not the whole enchilada. The freshness and authenticity of Mixtec's cuisine, at such a fantastic price, makes it a neighborhood must.
The nachos are sublime - beans and cheese on every chip. The sangria is a perfect complement - and cheap - but the chunks of fruit could be crisper/sweeter.

Mix Tec is the ideal, if not only, spot for finding authentic Mexican cuisine. The interior, while brightly lit and not exactly welcoming with metal-vinyl chairs, can still be considered "warm" if only through the friendliness and helpfulness of the family who serve as hosts, cooks, bartenders and waiters. The prices have risen in the past 6 months, but one could easily split an appetizer and entree and still walk away satisfied.
One of their best sellers, the consomme, is perfect for the wintry cold; if you prefer, call a few days ahead and they'll try and get some homemade posole for you! A definite must-have, while common in most tex-mex places, is the guacamole...served with corn tortillas, this dish is the real deal.
Seafood is also good, sticking with recipes that are found at just about every west coast palapa on the beach. There's plenty of food for vegetarians, too. Overall, this place is awesome...

Mixtec is one of the top choices for reasonably priced food in Adams Morgan. We enjoyed delicious tacos and solid chips and salsa and cold Mexican beer. The place is like a Mexican diner, but in a very good way.

The service was terrible. If I had to do it over, I would order the meal to go, because their take out service is usually faster than the 45 minutes we waited for our food. Since they don't bring chips and salsa to the table before the meal, the wait was particularly painful. Their Xochimilco torta is excellent, and they have these awesome guacamole-flavored tortilla chips.
