City Paper Review
Have-it-your-way dining is a hallmark of the fast-food industry, but Alexandria’s Del Merei Grille lets diners play mix-and-match with gourmet components in an environment free of plastic booths and fluorescent lighting. Del Merei’s Southern cosmopolitan dinner menu is anchored by salads that can be made heartier by adding protein and a “From the Grille” column that invites diners to choose a meat or a portobello mushroom, add one of several sauces to it, and then select two side dishes. Cuts of beef are tasty and affordable ($17 to $25), considering the quality, and the “enhancements,” including a bracing peppercorn brandy cream and tangy house steak sauce, are served on the side—which encourages shared dipping. Still, sides tend to be the main event. Potatoes are served as a buttery mash that manages to be smooth without obliterating every chunk, and diners can add bacon, caramelized onion, goat cheese, and other extras to the whip if they like. Baked mac and cheese is penne dripping with creamy, sharp cheddar, and green vegetables, such as grilled asparagus and sautéed spinach, retain flavor and color but not too much crunch. And for those who would prefer to have the kitchen assemble their entrées rather than participate in do-it-yourself meal-making, there are eleven chef’s suggestions, where the meat, sauce, and sides are predetermined.

Even though there is a somewhat cramped dining space, the food makes up for lack of room. The frickles with the remoulade sauce for dipping are a great salty fried appetizer. The portions are hearty at dinner, especially the steak entrees that come with two sides and an optional sauce. Deserts are wonderful so save room for some comfy American-style treats. The bill was a bit shocking, but the food was worth the price in the end.

I was taking a group of people (11) from all over the country. The folks from Texas and Oklahoma were "blown away" by the quality of the steaks - outstanding! Our large group received prompt attention - meal service was excellent. From appetizers to dessert the evening was a hit - everyone is looking forward to another trip when in the area. The Del Merei Grille did a superb job warming up folks on a cold January night.

This is a new restaurant in the Del Ray section of Alexandria. We were there for a fundraiser for a candidate for sherrif. While probably an unusual evening, the food was outstanding! For a new spot, the service was excellent. Lots of variety on the menu - I had the tenderloin with one of the sauces - cheese grits and collard greens - excellent! My wife had the salmon - also a great choice. This is a fun spot - we look forward to frequent visits.
