The Mountain Goats at the 9:30 Club Friday, November 27

If you thought Colin Meloy had a patent on millennial song-cycles, you haven’t been paying attention to John Darnielle, also known as the Mountain Goats. Besides a sort of Proustian obsession with conservation of character over twenty-plus-song series, Darnielle’s penchant for chapter-and-verse biblical quotations and invocations of ecclesiastical Latin both aggravate and leaven his music’s occasionally punkish, Appalachia-once-removed acoustic drive. “He has raised me from the pit and set me high,” Darnielle sings in “Psalms 40:2”—a nice abridgment of the psalm itself—before praying, “Lord send me a mechanic if I’m not beyond repair.” That humans are wreckage—Darnielle delights in words like “fusillage” and “shrapnel” to describe relationships—doesn’t, apparently, diminish their divinity. Or the appropriateness of dedicating epic concept albums to dysfunctional couples.

THE MOUNTAIN GOATS PERFORM WITH FINAL FANTASY AT 8 P.M. AT THE 9:30 CLUB, 815 V ST. NW. $20. (202) 265-0930.
