The Beerspotter: Legend Lager Sometimes you just want a fancy version of a plain old beer.

Legend Lager

Where Spotted: Whole Foods, 2700 Wilson Blvd., Arlington

Price: $2.99/24 oz. bottle

Basics Instinct: I’ve been on this kick where the only beer I want is a fresh, flavorful lager. Maybe it’s a professional hazard of beer writing, this hop-, seasonal- and imperial-fatigue. But Legend’s lager is a restorative for drinkers who are full up with extreme beer. Its faint bagel sweetness tastes like the grain it was brewed with—and nothing else.

Blond Ambition: It’s more important than with perhaps any other beer: Lagers should be drunk fresh and preferably unfiltered. You could pull out your wine thesaurus and list a hundred terms to describe a good lager’s complexity, but all it really wants you to do is drink and enjoy. There’s no glory in good craft lagers, but there should be.
