Twice as long as your average pop song, The Archive is a hipster’s wet documentary. Paul Mawhinny, owner of the largest vinyl record collection in the world, has been forced to shut the doors of his record shop. Mawhinny comes across both as a dedicated, eccentric individual and a self-righteous, indignant loser when he says: “I’ve given my whole life to this [but] the world is dead out there…it’s going to take them years to see what they’re going to miss.” It’s a subtle contradiction. But as the theatrical ending—set to John Miles’ “Music”—clearly demonstrates, director Sean Dunne lacks that most cherished attribute of the hipster scene—a sense of irony.
