Ma Bar

“I was always addicted to strength,” admits 73-year-old power lifter Bill McFayden. Though he’s old enough to be a great-grandfather, this ripped Scotsman is as enthusiastic as a schoolboy when discussing his love of pushing punishingly heavy weights into the air while looking like someone you would never, ever want make a Highlander joke about. A mere 12 minutes of starkly lit power lifters doing what they do best, Ma Bar packs the primal emotional punch of a feature film. Drawing on the same raw physicality that makes Annie Leibovitz’s Olympian portraits irresistible, Scottish filmmakers Adrian McDowall and Finlay Pretsell uncover a hero as inspiring as William Wallace. Still, had Mel Gibson been as cut as McFayden, Braveheart would have ended differently.
