A Note on Statistics

Within each Hoods & Services neighborhood-zone profile, you will find a box containing demographic, real estate, and crime statistics. That information was culled from data made available by NeighborhoodInfo DC, an inititative of the Urban Institute and D.C. Local Initiatives Support Corp. that maintains an indispensible Web site breaking down these stats and dozens of others—check it out at neighborhoodinfodc.org.

The demographic data are furnished by the U.S. Census Bureau, with the caveat that the numbers are based on the 2000 Census, and clearly the city has changed drastically in that time. In non-census years, the Bureau does issue estimates, but it only details changes in the District as a whole. More recent data, however, are available for real-estate and crime numbers, as noted in the profiles’ stats boxes.

One more caveat: In some cases, the statistics may not align precisely with the boundaries of our neighborhood zones. In some cases, they perfectly match one or more of the city’s 39 neighborhood clusters, which are planning areas defined by the District government. In other cases, they do not, and for those zones, the statistics are based on more granular census-tract data.
