Everything about Guillermo Klein’s music is eccentric. The Argentine jazz pianist/composer—who spent 10 years in the United States, returning to his homeland just as the hype mill began catching up with him—is intent on making his own rules when it comes to melody and form. And he always seems ready to jump from funk to rock to classical to folk to other uncategorizable experiments. Yet those apparent flights of fancy never quite pull away from jazz—they just add excitement and unpredictability to the music. Klein usually fronts a big band, but he also leads smaller groups that present his work on the most intimate and welcoming of terms—mitigating the fact that it’s as unique and weird as anything he does.
