Internships
Washington City Paper is an alternative newsweekly with a circulation of about 90,000. We employ two paid reporting interns at a time. For Washington, anyway, the internship is a rare find—low on grunt work and high on potential. We expect 40 hours a week from interns. In return we pay minimum wage plus standard freelance rates for each story published. The term is flexible and usually lasts from six to nine months. Anyone with ability and drive should come out of here with several decent clips.
We put a high premium on good writing, tenacious reporting, and fresh ideas. Interns are treated as full members of our newsroom and must rely on their own initiative to find story ideas and generate copy. Our ideal candidate has some college or "real world" journalism experience and a lot of energy. Since Washington is a competitive news environment, we are not interested in candidates lacking clips or journalism experience. Familiarity with D.C. is a plus but not a requirement.
Interested reporters should send a cover letter (explaining their interest in our paper), a résumé, and up to six clips (stick to reported pieces, not reviews). Please only send hard copies. We consider applications on a rolling basis, though we typically make hires in the fall and spring. If we are interested, we will contact you no later than a month after your submission.
