Jason Robards, Ben Gazzara, Al Pacino and Brian Dennehy have all played Erie, the downtrodden, lonely gambler at the heart of Eugene O'Neill's Hughie. I haven’t seen any of those portrayals. I know only that Richard Schiff’s red-eyed Erie, now playing at the Lansburgh Theatre, feels definitive. As Schiff unloads his saga to his hotel's night clerk, he captures the intricate sadness of the lowly drunk he portrays. (CK)
