Director Eric Schaeffer’s intent on reinventing this boisterous musical, freeing it from the primary colors and cartoon-like settings of its original Broadway production, finding the human, character-based story within. Nancy Opel’s pert, pleasantly down-to-earth Dolly is a good start, and the supporting cast is amusing and full-voiced, even if the show does not lend itself to easy downsizing. Making do with a cast of 16 in a show with ten speaking parts leaves choreographer Karma Camp a teeming, stage-filling chorus of six with which to create the surrounding bustle of New York, and an all-male chorus of four, count ‘em, four, prancing waiters for the title number -- barely enough to handle a Tuesday night crowd at T.G.I Friday’s. That Dolly’s still glowing, she’s still crowing, she’s still going strong, qualifies as quite an accomplishment under the circumstances. (BM)
