Mary Bridget Davies nails the wails of a raspily pitch-perfect Joplin impersonation in a 24-song evening that’s more tribute concert than play. Between songs, Davies’ Joplin is allowed to ramble on about how she was seduced by the musical stylings of Odetta and Nina Simone, but never so much as references her affairs with Southern Comfort or heroin – more likely sources of the ache in her famous whiskey rasp. Style over substance-abuse – a sure cure for any chance the evening might have theatrical resonance. But then, the production isn’t going for depth, just to recapture the singer’s energy and zest.
