All-Local Glen’s Garden Market Now Selling Bud Light and Bananas

DANIELLE BANANA

Glen's Garden Market has taken great pains to only sell food grown and produced within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. As of today, the Dupont market has given up on that mission.

Owner Danielle Vogel is stocking the shelves with mangos, kiwis, limes, avocados, grapefruit, and other imported fruits. The prepared foods counter will serve pizza with Spam and pineapple chunks as well as guacamole. And the bar, which normally sells $4 pints of local craft beer, will instead pour Bud Light, Michelob, and Shock Top drafts for $6. "They'll pay what people are used to paying in other places," says Vogel.

FOOLSSIGNAnd that's how locavores do April Fools' Day.

"I thought it would be fun to bring in things that are overtly contrary to our mission and our point of view," says Vogel of the one-day prank on her customers. "The whole point of this joke is to define us by counterexample."

But what if people like their limes and their Bud Light a little too much?

"There will be people that complain about not having it the next day, I guarantee it," Vogel says. "But we also have people who understand what we're doing and like it enough to come back all the time...I don't think they'll be sad to see the $6 beers go."
