Dacha Beer Garden Opens Tomorrow

Dacha Beer Garden will reopen in Shaw tomorrow at noon, but you're going to have to wait another year for the permanent structure and kitchen.

Co-owner Dmitri Chekaldin says the build-out was delayed because of a dispute over the design with the Historic Preservation Board. That's since been resolved: "The changes to the original design are so minuscule that you  just can not help but wonder what was all this fuss about," he says.

Chekaldin says he and business partner Ilya Alter don't want to break ground in the middle of beer garden season, so instead they're going to hold off until Nov. 2 to get started on construction.

While Dacha won't be serving food yet, guests are welcome to bring their own to the picnic table seating. The beer garden also has expanded its beer offerings, including a rare doppelbock-style beer called Korbinian from Munich-based Weihenstephaner, which claims to be the oldest continuously operating brewery in the world. Also new: B Nektar Cherry Mead on tap, plus red and white wine available by the glass and bottle.

As for Dacha's second location at 923-925 5th St. NW, Chekaldin says lease negotiations are still ongoing. Assuming the deal is finalized in the next several weeks, he projects a March 2015 opening.
