Get Your Gourmet Dirty-Water Dogs and Corn Dogs at Roofers Union Tonight

20140205_093225The group behind Cleveland Park’s Ripple officially opens Roofers Union in the Reef’s former space tonight. The restaurant will showcase Ripple chef Marjorie Meek-Bradley’s take on everyday, casual foods, like cipollini onions rings, bratwurst, and andouille corn dogs.

Unlike its more upscale sister restaurant, Roofers Union will offer a fairly constant menu at lower prices, with dishes ranging from $12 to $24. The restaurant has a long list of bar snacks, such as crispy pig ear served over a frisée salad and chicken wings in a Sriracha-honey glaze. The menu also features a wide range of gourmet sandwiches, burgers, and sausages, including the $8 "dirty water dog" on brioche bun. Larger entrées include items like steak frites and beer steamed mussels.

If you prefer to pull up for a quick snack and a drink, each floor of this three-story restaurant has a bar. Bar manager Josh Fatemi, who previously worked at Bourbon and Pearl Dive Oyster Palace/Black Jack, has created a new cocktail menu that includes drinks like “Alligator Wine,” with Fords gin, Diep9 Young Grain Genever, Dolin Blanc, basil peppercorn syrup, celery, and lemon bitters, and basil. The bar menu lists craft beers and hard-to-find wines as well.

The heated rooftop bar, which inspired the restaurant’s name, offers a great view of Adams Morgan, but isn’t set to open until early spring. The space was designed by Betsy Marmet, who also designed all the interiors at Ripple (and is the wife of owner Roger Marmet). Keeping in trend, a mix of new and repurposed items give the restaurant that “industrial-meets-country” look. Plush leather banquettes line the walls of the main floor, which have been paneled with old roofing material.

Roofers Union will be open for dinner at 5 p.m. daily. In addition, chef Meek-Bradley plans to launch a brunch menu in the spring.

UPDATE:  An initial version of this story stated that larger entrées include vegetarian lasagna covered in red sauce and mozzarella and fish tacos with cabbage and pico de gallo. Those items are no longer planned for the opening menu.
