Gay Bar DC Eagle Planning to Relocate East of the River

cover_Eagle-31One of the city's oldest gay bars and leather daddy hotspot DC Eagle will close its location at 639 New York Ave. NW later this month. And it looks like it's moving east of the Anacostia River to a huge space at 3701 Benning Road NE. with a capacity for 800 people, including a "summer garden" with 100 seats.

A liquor license application for DC Eagle at that address describes the new spot as a "tavern, restaurant, and dance bar with continental restaurant fare." Entertainment will include "four-piece bands," dancing, open mic nights, contests, and charitable fundraisers.

Attorney Paul Pascal, who filed the liquor license application, says the DC Eagle team is also planning to open a cigar bar next door to the new location.

Y&H has reached out to owner Ted Clements and will update when we hear back.

    Maybe they'll extend the streetcar!

Are you sure that is the correct address of the new location? Doesnt sound right....

Right at the intersection of Benning Road, 295, and the new streetcar. Huge parking lot, privacy, 16,000 sq. ft. building at $1M. Perfect for the Eagle (or any club).

3701 benning. And a cigar bar. You can't make this stuff up.

Perfect spot for rough trade. lol

are sloshed pigs in buttless chaps going to be dragging home drunk eagle trash on the streetcar named rough trade?

  • Ward 7

Intersection is Benning & Minnesota. Access would be from Minnesota, not Benning (address is on the bridge). Remote location, though one argument against marijuana cultivation center was children walking by on way to school (there is no way because of location at back of parking lot behind Rainbow and next to rail road tracks).

The streetcar extension will not come for many years. I don't believe if it has been decided if the extension will go from Oklahoma Avenue (current end point) to Minnesota, or all the way to East Capitol on Benning Rd.

It will be funny to see reaction of those who fought the cultivation center. Many will be openly homophobic. This is not far from the Rays the Steaks location (which had a liquor license) that closed because of absolutely zero marketing.

The current councilmember has been totally ineffective in bringing development to Ward 7. Gay development...hmmm...is that what it is going to take to get construction cranes in Ward 7 (currently there are NONE)?

I live in this area and I have no problem with this bar joining the neighborhood. So long as they help keep the area where they are clean and there aren't a lot of fights etc. (as I'm told they have NO history of) they are welcome! I look forward to them moving in and I will come out to support their liquor license application as I anticipate they will face many hate mongers.
