And Then There Were Four

If your Saturdays are like mine, you often plan the afternoon around growler hours at the District’s three production breweries: DC Brau, Chocolate City, and 3 Stars. Prepare to add a fourth stop: Atlas Brew Works in Ivy City, about a mile north of H Street NE. Earlier this month, founders Justin Cox and Will Durgin introduced their beer with an impressive (read: liver-defying) week of launch events. Since then, the new brewery’s District Common, a light, refreshing, Pilsner-like lager, and Rowdy, a spicy, full-bodied pale ale with rye, have been available at craft beer bars across D.C. But the Atlas brew that caught my attention is NSFW, which has nothing to do with hastily minimizing your browser when the boss walks by.

WTF is NSFW?

Its details kept secret until its release, NSFW is a 9.2-percent alcohol Imperial black IPA (think half Imperial stout, half double IPA). Inspired by his time at Pyramid Breweries in Portland, Ore., Durgin crafted the beer as an homage to Cascadian dark ales, a term that references the West Coast region where the black IPA style originated and where most American hops are grown. Atlas’ version favors Chinook hops, which impart pine and smoky notes that work well with the beer’s roasted malt. NSFW’s cocoa powder and coffee aromas give way to bitter roast, rich chocolate, and resinous hop flavors. The intense but balanced brew is perfect for a cool autumn evening. But if you get some, savor it. This limited release won’t be around much longer.
