Daikaya Launches Late Night Menu With Doughnut and Pop-Tart Ice Cream Sandwiches
They may not yet rival the cronut, but ice cream sandwich dessert hybrids have received their fair share of hype this summer. Ted's Bulletin (along with Carl's Jr.) gained attention for its off-the-menu homemade Pop-Tart ice cream sandwiches, while Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats food truck and Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken debuted doughnut ice cream sandwiches.
Now, you can find both novelties on Daikaya's new izakaya late night menu, available from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Chef and co-owner Katsuya Fukushima claims he had no idea that other people were already creating the ice cream sandwich mash-ups. He says he came up with the idea when he was at Safeway buying Krispy Kremes. Then he saw Pop-Tarts, which he also loves, in the same aisle.
Both desserts are stuffed with ginger gelato and red bean. The Pop-Tart (strawberry) is the real Kellogg's deal. The doughnut is grilled with slight char marks, giving it an extra crisp exterior.
Of course, there's much more to the late-night menu than satisfying your sweet tooth. Fukushima prepares five varieties of his take on the bao ($5.50 each), all made with steamed Hawaiian King's bread, and stuffed with a choice of agedashi tofu, pork belly, fried horse mackerel, sliced pork shoulder, or fried chicken. Other comfort food snacks include takoyaki (octopus dumpling balls), onigiri (rice stuffed with miso or kombu), and tater tots or hash browns "okonomiyaki style" with Kewpie mayo, okonomiyaki sauce, shredded nori, and bonito flakes. Check out the full menu below.
UPDATE: Although the kitchen closes after 1 a.m., cocktails at the izakaya are available until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
