Young and Hungry

The now-legendary cronut, a trademarked croissant-doughnut hybrid from New York pastry chef Dominique Ansel, is getting lots of hype this summer. But you don’t need to leave the District to find equally outlandish dessert mash-ups. From Pop-Tart ice cream sandwiches to doughnut milkshakes, here are a few ways to double your sugar rush in one sitting—complete with our own names to identify them. Don’t worry, they’re not trademarked, so feel free to use them.

Concrete Ice Cream Shake + Doughnut = Doughcrete

In case Shake Shack’s famed concretes weren’t far enough over the top, the burger joint’s new location in the International Spy Museum has added another dessert into the mix with its “Doughnuts are Forever” flavor, exclusive to the F Street location. It combines vanilla custard, coconut doughnuts from Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, strawberry jam, and rainbow sprinkles. And if you’re on a milkshake-mixed-with-other-desserts bender, the new location also offers a “SMOREScode” concrete that tastes like the classic camping treat.

$4.25 at Shake Shack, 800 F St. NW

Doughnut + Muffin = The Muffinutter

Available on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, Baked & Wired’s Donut Muffin has the cakey texture and cinnamon taste of an apple cider doughnut, packaged in muffin form. Because if it’s shaped like a muffin, then it’s a totally healthy breakfast option. Right?

$2.64 at Baked & Wired, 1052 Thomas Jefferson St. NW

Cupcake + Bread Pudding = The Puddingcake

How do you make a cupcake even more indulgent? Douse it in eggs and heavy cream and bake it into bread—ahem, cake—pudding. Buzz Bakery offers them in red velvet and raspberry varieties.

$3.95 at Buzz Bakery, 901 Slaters Lane, Alexandria and 818 North Quincy St., Arlington

Pop-Tart + Ice Cream Sandwich = The Popwich

You may have tried a homemade Pop-Tart from Ted’s Bulletin, but have you tried it with ice cream? If you ask, the Capitol Hill diner (and its soon-to-open 14th Street NW outpost) will turn any of its daily Pop-Tart specials into a sandwich filled with your choice of ice cream.

$7.29 at Ted’s Bulletin, 505 8th St. SE

Doughnuts + Ice Cream Sandwich = The Doughwich

Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats food truck now allows patrons to make an frozen custard sandwich using any of its dozen doughnut flavors. The red velvet doughnut with vanilla custard is its specialty.

$8 at Goodies Frozen Custard & Treats, around D.C.

Creme brulee + doughnut + ice cream sandwich = The Bruleenutwich

The Frankendessert triple crown goes to Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, which is now selling ice cream sandwiches made with its crème brûlée doughnuts. The crackle-topped, pudding-filled creations taste exactly like the French dessert they imitate—and adding ice cream only improves them. The Bruleenutwich is one of a rotating array of doughnut ice cream sandwiches offered; others include raspberry verbena ice cream inside a passionfruit doughnut and mocha java ice cream in a chocolate one.

$5.25 at Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, 1308 G St. NW

I feel compelled to add the "doissant" -- available in Silver Spring at the Kefa Cafe. (H/T to Dan Reed @ Just Up the Pike -

What is a Doissant? Its a deep-friend chocolate croissant filled with malted pastry cream, topped with burnt chocolate caramel and toasted coconut.

    Haven't had one yet...
