District Tea Lodge Is Now Open

You can finally get kombucha on tap and kava-kava root cocktails at District Tea Lodge. The tea spot from Yoga District founder Jasmine Chehrazi opened today at 1922 I St. NW. This week between 2 and 5 p.m., buy a stein of tea, and get one free. (That's right, tea comes in beer steins.)

An in-house herbalist selected the teas, many of which you won't find elsewhere in the city. Teatenders, like bartenders, will direct guests to the teas that best suit their needs. Also to drink: alcohol-free cocktails made with kava-kava root, which create a "meditative, relaxing" effect and numb the mouth, Chehrazi says. A selection of different kava-kava roots with varying strengths and tastes and can be mixed with mango, pineapple, and other juices. Two types of kombucha will be on tap at all times.

District Tea House will also offer a limited animal-free, gluten-free menu based on Ayurvedic medicine. All the profits from the tea spot will go to Chehrazi's nonprofit, Yoga Activist, which brings yoga to underserved communities.
