“Speakeasy” and Ski Lodge-Themed Lounge Coming to Dupont

A "discotheque meets après-ski chalet" called Kabin is coming to 1337 Connecticut Ave. NW in late May, and The Sheppard, a separate "speakeasy" from the same owners, is opening up in an adjoining property in June or July.

Kabin comes from NLA Group owners Kunal ShahVinoda BasnayakeDustin Huynh, and Rajeev Subramanian. Shah and Basnayake, former owners of Eden nightclub and current partners in Karma by Erwin Gomez, are the minds behind the "speakeasy."

Kabin, which is above The Gryphon, aims to replicate the feel of an Aspen ski lodge with charcoal-finished walls, tanned-leather banquettes, polished brass and bronze mirrors, herringbone floors, and an infinity fire box in the center of the room. A mirrored prism ceiling that refracts light is meant to create an abstracted mountain view, and VIP nooks made of stone and glass overlook the room.

Details on The Sheppard, which is at a separate undisclosed address, are scarce at this point. Stay tuned.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this post called the speakeasy The Shepherd. The correct spelling is The Sheppard, after the 1917 Sheppard Act which introduced Prohibition to D.C.

What's the difference between a disco and an après-ski lodge? Uggs? Another speakeasy? Cue the inflated drink prices.
