Philadelphia’s La Colombe Opening Cafe in Shaw

In Philadelphia, La Colombe is the go-to destination for coffee aficionados. Now, the roaster and cafe is heading to D.C.

Regional sales director Steve Steinruck tells Y&H the coffee company is finalizing a lease for a cafe at 922 N St. NW in Blagden Alley, right next to Rogue 24. There's extensive construction to be done, but Steinruck anticipates it will open before the end of the year. La Colombe also has cafe locations in Chicago, New York, and Seoul, South Korea.

The cafe will have a small roaster on-site and a mezzanine above the main sitting area for coffee tastings. The cafe will specialize in farm-direct, single-origin coffee. Co-founder Todd Carmichael is the star of Dangerous Grounds, a Travel Channel show that follows him around the world on his hunt for the highest-grade coffee.

Steinruck says they're also looking to unveil a Steampunk, an super modern coffeemaker that quickly brews a perfect cup.

The cafe will also have some basic food component, possibly doughnuts or beignets.

In the meantime, you can find La Colombe's coffee at several retailers and restaurants in D.C., including Whole Foods, CityZen, and the Mayflower Hotel. Blue Duck Tavern will begin serving it next week, and Stephen Starr's 14th Street NW French brasserie Le Diplomate will offer it as well.
