Chocolate City’s Mister Mayor Beer Not Meant to Be Controversial
Chocolate City Beer is releasing a limited edition barrel-aged imperial stout with marionberries called Mister Mayor. The beer even has a tagline: "Beer for Life."
This is not the first time a local brewery has nodded to "Mayor for Life" Marion Barry. Last May, Flying Dog Brewery created a poster for its UnderDog Atlantic Lager with a photo of Barry and the phrase "Crack one open D.C." The ad was taken down at the request of Barry's lawyer.
But Chocolate City co-founder Ben Matz says his brewery means no disrespect with Mister Mayor. "It's not meant to be snarky." The brewery hasn't reached out to Barry yet to let him know about the brew. "Hell, if the guy wants a bottle, I'll give him one," Matz says.
The beer, which is brewed with marionberries from Marion County, Ore., was aged for seven months in whiskey barrels from Copper Fox Distillery in Sperryville, Va. The 11.5 percent medium-bodied stout has a tart, fruit taste. The aging also gives the beer coconut and vanilla flavors for a "round, mellow taste." Matz says he's had the idea for his beer for about four and a half years.
Mister Mayor will debut this Saturday at Chocolate City's facility at 2801 8th St. NE from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The brewery produced only about 950 bottles (22 ounces each), which it will sell for $12 during its weekend growler hours. The beer will also be available at Schneider's of Capitol Hill and ChurchKey.
