Organic Juice Bar Now Open in Adams Morgan
Jo Anna Hawthorne, owner of Hawthorne Homemade in Cleveland Park, has a new juice bar and cafe called Carrot and Kale opening today in Adams Morgan.
Carrot and Kale is located inside MINT Health Club and Spa, just to the right of the main desk, but is open to the public. The small space with a counter and a few seats sells freshly pressed juices, smoothies, wraps, salads, soups, and more. It sources all of its organic produce from local farms such as Tuscarora Organic Growers Coop in Hustontown, Pa., Farm to Family in Richmond, Va., and The Farm at Our House in Brookville, Md.
The offerings are limited to start: Only bottled juices are available for now along with a small selection of grab-and-go salads and wraps. But Carrot and Kale will begin making juices fresh on-site and introduce its full menu in the next few weeks.
We tried the "Glowing Skin" made with carrot, ginger, apple, kale, and parsley as well as the "Abundant Energy" with seasonal greens, romaine, celery, spinach, apple, and lemon. Both taste about as healthy as they sound, and given the local organic ingredients, they're not cheap either. The juices rang up at $8.18 each. (For comparison, Sweetgreen's organic Sweetpress juices, which come in slightly smaller bottles, go for $6 or $7.)
There are also plenty of vegan and vegetarian food options, including the "raw rah raw turnip wrap" with turnip, parsnips, almond cashew nut crunch, almond spread, bell peppers, and carrots wrapped in collard greens. It's a pretty hearty snack despite its looks (left). The cafe will also offer paninis and breakfast options (bagel with creamy herb tofu spread, anyone?).
Given the juice bar's location and size, it's more of a place to grab a bite and juice after the gym, rather than a place to sit and linger. In that regards, it's no competition for Pleasant Pops next door, which also offers an all-vegetarian menu and fresh juices in popsicle form.
