Frederik De Pue Opening a Restaurant in Former Café Atlántico Building

Think Food Group has sold the Penn Quarter building that housed Café Atlántico, Minibar, and America Eats Tavern to chef Frederik De Pue and his investors, who plan to open a new restaurant in the space by the end of the year.

The Belgian native worked in some top European restaurants before moving to D.C. in 2001 as executive chef for the European Commission Delegation ambassador. He currently owns 42˚ Catering based in Rockville and is weeks away from opening a seasonally focused restaurant in Shaw called Table.

De Pue says he's still developing the concept for the Penn Quarter restaurant, but "it will not be like Table. It will be something new for Penn Quarter that doesn't currently exist."

He's still in the preliminary design stages but don't expect any major changes to the physical space. "It's really going to be just a facelift," De Pue says. "We're going for a contemporary, not modern, but very comfortable environment."

As far as the six upstairs seats that were previously used for Minibar? De Pue says they will be gone. "The project will not have any reference to what existed before, other than an address," he says.

De Pue declined to comment on the price of the sale, but Think Food Group bought the building for $2.45 million in 2010, according to land records.
