Young and Hungry

What’s Going on With the Pyongyang Gang?

At the beginning of the summer, Michael Thompson launched the Pyongyang Gang, a Korean food pop-up inside Adams Morgan Irish pub The Blaguard. Y&H found the kimchi pork belly sandwiches and twice-fried sweet and spicy chicken wings to be a pleasant drunk-food alternative to mozzarella sticks and jalapeño bites.

Thompson now tells Y&H he has scaled back the weekly Korean food nights to the first Wednesday of every month. The next one is Sept. 5. Thompson, who works full-time at ShopHouse Southeast Asia Kitchen, says his business partner, James Jang, moved to South Korea a month after their launch and doing the pop-ups alone on his one day off became too much to continue on a weekly basis.

In the meantime, Thompson says he's interested in bringing his pop-up to a new location, where he hopes to attract larger crowds. He's also been in talks with food truck owners about using their vehicles during off hours for a food truck pop-up. Stay tuned.
