By now, there’s a good chance you’ve seen “Hot Cheetos & Takis.” (If not, watch it now!) The viral video features a crew of Minneapolis kids calling themselves Y.N.RichKids rapping about their favorite snacks. Rolling Stone has already suggested the track may be “the summer’s final truly great jam.” It’s so catchy that it even got Y&H craving some hot Cheetos and Takis.

But first: What the heck are Takis? A quick Google search revealed they are a Mexican corn strip snack. And according to the song, they’re way better than Fritos:

Got an ice flow and I’m super cold

Everybody knows that I’m so dope

I say yes to Takis

And you say no to Cheetos

I can have them man

And you can stick to Fritos

Also, Doritos have nothing on hot Cheetos and Takis:

Got them Skittles, Starburst, Fritos, and Doritos

But nothing can compare to them h-o-t Cheetos

And them Takis

So, Y&H decided to conduct a taste test to evaluate this junk food jab. That meant tracking down some Takis, which was no easy task. No luck at Safeway or CVS or Casa Lebrato, a little bodega at Ontario and Columbia roads NW. We finally found the “fuego” hot chili and lime flavored variety at El Gavilan Grocery in Adams Morgan. The Takis also come in “crunchy fajita,” “nitro,” and “salsa brava” flavors, but none of them were in stock.

We also picked up some Crunchy Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, original and chili cheese Fritos, and Spicy Nacho Doritos. The bag of Takis weighed the most of the group. Turns out they also have the most crunch and most intense flavor of the snacks. The cigarette-sized rolled corn chips are bright red with a smack of lime, followed by a punch of heat.

Those kids aren’t messing around with their snacks. Washington City Paper editorial staffers unanimously agreed the Takis are much better than both types of Fritos (though perhaps with the flavoring, it wasn’t a fair match-up); the Fritos ranked last on the list. As for Doritos vs. Cheetos, there was some disagreement over which was superior. Y&H sided with Doritos on this one. But most of all, we’d like to thank Y.N.RichKids for introducing us to Takis. And for getting “snack snack snack CRUNCH” stuck in our heads.
