Judging Restaurant Olympic Deals
Everyone wants to get in on the Olympics action with themed food and drink specials. But whose deals are worthy of the gold? Y&H judged them based on creativity and bang for your buck.
Art & Soul
415 New Jersey Ave. NW
The Deal: The All-American cocktail with whiskey, Hum liquor, honey syrup, soda water, White Hall Viognier, and a slice of orange. It's normally $13, but the drink will go for $6 for 15 minutes from the moment a U.S. athlete wins a gold medal. Available through Aug. 12.
Medal: Bronze. There are better cocktails on Art & Soul's menu, and the time frame for the special is too short.
1315 16th St. NW
The Deal: Rouge, White & Blue cocktail ($9), made with Bluecoat Gin, peach puree, hibiscus grenadine, iced tea, and lemon juice. Available through Aug. 12.
Medal: Silver. Creativity in ingredients, but it's not any cheaper than most of the other cocktails on the menu.
1625 I St. NW
The Deal: $5 Gold, Silver, and Bronze cocktails. The Gold has Meyers Gold, fresh basil, orange juice, lemon juice, and a dash of Campari. The Silver is made with Milagro Silver, ginger-vanilla syrup, lime and egg white. The Bronze contains Makers Mark and a jasmine tea reduction with a splash of bitters. Available through Aug. 12.
Medal: Gold. These cocktails not only sound delicious and are well-thought out; they're cheap, too.
1606 K St. NW and 600 F St. NW
The Deal: "Go for the Gold Pizzas," which are any 14 inch specialty pies, are $10 from 4 to 6 p.m. by mentioning the U.S.A.'s gold-medal wins. Specialty pies are normally $15.99.
Good Stuff Eatery
303 Pennsylvania Ave. NW and 2110 Crystal Dr., Arlington, Va.
The Deal: Limited edition sticky toffee milkshake and "Brit Burger" with smoked English cheddar, caramelized onions, and horseradish mayo. Available through Aug. 12.
Medal: Silver. The toffee milkshake sounds nearly as good as the toasted marshmallow one, but we're not sure using English cheddar is enough to make a British burger.
Johnny's Half Shell
400 North Capitol St. NW
The Deal: Pub snacks like cucumber sandwiches, Scotch eggs, Welsh rarebit, and beer-battered fish with chips—all $2.50 each. Available exclusively on the patio from 4:30 p.m. to close through Aug. 12.
Medal: Gold. Sure, fish and chips is a little cliche, but Johnny's deserves a gold based on prices alone.
1110 Vermont Ave. NW
The Deal: Gold, Silver, and Bronze cocktails for $10 each. Gold contains Milagro silver tequila, Triple sec, ginger syrup, and orange juice. Silver has Bombay gin, Maraschino cherry liquor, lemon/sour mix, and grapefruit juice. Bronze has vanilla-infused Jack Daniels, and homemade root beer. Available from 4 p.m. on through Aug. 12.
Medal: Bronze. Why would you put "silver" tequila in the Gold cocktail? Also, no deal here. The prices are the same as the normal cocktail menu.
Ping Pong Dim Sum
900 7th St. NW and 1 Dupont Circle NW
The Deal: The $11 flaming passion fruit cocktail is meant to look like like the Olympic torch.
Medal: Silver. Points for creativity (we're glad someone is taking advantage of fire), but no discount here.
PostScript at The Madison
1177 15th St. NW
The Deal: The London Fog Cutter cocktail, $13, made with London Dry Gin, Absinthe, Maraschino Liqueur. and kaffir lime leaves. There's also The Madison Olympic Power Breakfast: a $16 XXL vegetable egg white omelette filled with spinach, mushrooms, and broccoli served with sliced local tomatoes, minted berry salad, and Greek yogurt layered with quinoa granola.
Medal: Silver. This is one of the only deals that's healthy enough that an Olympian might actually eat it.
1234 H St. NE
The Deal: $3 Bud tallboys throughout the games, $2 during U.S. women's soccer and boxing.
Medal: Silver. What's more patriotic than Bud?
The Queen Vic
1206 H St. NE
The Deal: If Great Britain wins a gold medal, the restaurant and bar will celebrate with $4 pints of Newcastle all day.
Medal: Bronze. Not worth going out of your way for this one, but if you're there, might as well order a Newcastle.
Virtue Feed & Grain
106 S. Union Street, Alexandria, VA
The Deal: "Gold Medal" lunch with specials like Greek salad, moussaka, Maryland crab sandwich, and Welsh rarebit for $12 and an addition $2 for a can of domestic beer. At the bar only, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Aug. 11.
Medal: Silver. Props for representing Greece, America, and Britain, but Greek salad and Maryland crab cakes aren't too creative.
Know of other deals? Leave 'em in the comments (and feel free to give them medals).
